STAGE DE YOGA!

Ever since i opened the gallery, i had the desire to let it be a LIVING space, a place where different energies could circulate and penetrate the paintings hanging on the walls. and now with my recent discovery of the world of "bienêtre" i've opened the space up to spiritual/physical practices......such as yoga, which is no longer a new-age california phenomenon for spiritual types but for many years now,  has grown in popularity to such a degree that i sometimes ask myself..."who doesn't do yoga?" (i'm one of the few to answer that i don't do yoga....but not for long as i will certainly be attending simon's stage on sunday the 18th). hope you will decide to join us.

ART NUE

thursday night, pNeuMatiKos  performed at the gallery. what was experienced goes so far beyond words that it is no obvious task to describe. the internally liberating effect of their performance came from the direct, pure, intense and totally instinctive and natural way they performed. it felt to me like this was art stripped of all artifice, art concentrated into a pure energy coming from breath (which is life force), and the body's movements. this was ART NUE (which i like as a term because it contains the same letters as NATURE ). i love the idea that they performed naked art - the pure essence of how the body's mind expresses itself....breath, body, sound energy
luna montenegro, martin bakero and adrian fisher were each emanating strange beautiful animal raptures in the sounds and movements their bodies made which were enhanced and in close relation to dan charles dahan's sound poetry interventions. they were not choosing with their minds what to do, how to move, what sounds to make, the energy circuitry in their bodies was let loose and allowed to manfiest and express itself in whatever way it wished. this was primal grace. there was a rhythmic, ritualistic, primitive, sacred, wild, unleashing of breath, sound, and body. the performance took us all into a new unknown, it was a place that felt pure and free.

a most enchanted evening

last saturday night was a most enchanted evening. it began with a piano concert given by the lovely eunice chen who dazzled us all with her interpretations of beethoven, chopin, schumann and liszt. we were especially privileged to have her friend, guest star sopranist fabrice di falco, join her with his divine voice performing 'cinco canciones negras' by xavier montsalvaltge.

after the concert, dr. sketchy's anti-art school held its first drawing class at the laboratoire des suppositions (the first of hopefully many to come). the models, isadora gamberetti, sucre d'orge and lada redstar were exquisitely dressed, (one can't help but fall in love with isadora). the atmosphere was dreamy and we all spent a magical evening together, cozy and content with a musical 'after' into the wee hours of the morning.

pommes libertines - richard conte

last thursday evening the gallery celebrated the opening of its first-ever photography exhibition. after richard conte described his collaborative process working together with the gardners of versailles at the park balbi and showed me the performance that preceded the photographs (videos of both are shown at the gallery), i had to admit that those juicy erotic apples were far too irresistable! a wonderful little book "les pommes libertines" accompanying the project with images of the apples and texts by emmanuel pierrat is also available (editor: bernard pascuito).
besides the obvious cider and apple juice, arletty abadi concocted a fresh apple, ginger and cucumber juice and prepared apple chips with cinammon salt for dipping into special apple-based wonders.

what's more, wallpapering the gallery had always been a secret fantasy of mine and when richard suggested we wallpaper the exhibition space to better bring out the 'pommes libertines' with their pristine white backgrounds, i was enthused to say the least! the exhibition will be up until mid-july so i hope to see you all there.

beep! & timosaurus

we were so privileged to have beep! and timosaurus play last friday night. they are the sweetest young guys from oakland, california and unbelievably talented musicians. it was an intimate crowd, the lights dimmed, some of us seated on the floor with a glass of wine.  how smoothly their music lulled us into an internal journey through the intelligent and interesting sounds of improvisational experimental jazz. michael coleman, composer and pianist of beep! impressed even the most critical jazz aficionados.
and of course, i, who love nothing more than to imagine the music nourishing the art on the walls, took special delight in watching the paintings listen to the concert together with me as we took that inner journey together into dimensions of experience that sometimes reach so deep that they can only be expressed by tears instead of words.

may slips away...

they say time flies when you're having fun. i think time just flies. perhaps at the speed of light. but time apparently stops at lightspeed. if it stops then does it exist?
let's live as timelessly as possible, to seek a life in the eternal present; maybe that's how to become enLIGHTened.
is there a speed of thought? or do thoughts all travel at different speeds depending on their content/quality? i bet there are thoughts that travel as fast as light (and these must certainly be loving thoughts, the one's that come from the heart's mind and not from fear-filled rationality).
what does this have to do with art? everything. art which possesses inner truth from the heart's mind is art with the power to escort us into that magico-poetical realm of timelessness.
i like to imagine the gallery space as a vessel flying at lightspeed so that when people enter, they pass through into an expansive world of dreams where their heart's mind has a place to grow.

la vie en vert (more rattrapage)

on thursday may 14th we opened "la vie en vert (et contre tout)" a vernissage where i hung works from my collection that were suprisingly quite green! didn't know what the meaning of this was (whether it was related to a latent ecological consciousness that has been recently emerging following my trip to ecuador or whether it had more to do with martianesque matters). anyway, everyone loves michel gouery's intenstine/brain ceramics sculptures inside the aquariums with water. nice to see hung together works by li tianbing, stephane pencreac'h, ronan barrot, etc.
arletty abadi, my raw friend, prepared gorgeous green juice and green tea served in martini glasses and other green goodies like guacamole, eaten with green celery sticks of course.
we had the pleasure of listening to our prodigious pianist olivier, who, by the way, will be having a recital here in june (more on that later).

RATTRAPAGE

the purpose of this blog for me is to document the richness of life in the "laboratoire de suppositions" and to serve as a peep hole for the world to look into and discover the magical, kaleidoscopic life of the gallery. i regret that since the website finally was put on-line, that i didn't begin a daily ritual of blogging.
just for the sake of 'rattrapage', i hosted a wonderful cocktail party for the berkeley club of france the evening of april 28th. photos of the evening can be seen at:
about 75 berkeley alum showed up. i had the pleasure of talking with a lovely astrophysicist (she studies the sun), and a doctoral student writing on the history of paris, alex toledano, who led me to some amazing musicians that will be playing here on may 29th. Beep! is their name and they are coming from san francisco. here's more info:

piano playing for paintings

today at the gallery, two different pianists (a chilean jazz pianist and a young prodigious french classical pianist) happened each to stop by at different times in the day to play for a while in the gallery. i love when this happens because it enhances my mood while i'm working and when the music fills the air of the gallery, i am convinced that it nourishes the artworks (like giving water to plants) and that the artworks too are enjoying the music.  today i was certain that the figures in marcos carrasquer's works were listening with their ears along with me. some might find this notion a bit kooky, but i'm certain that the sound frequencies emitted by the piano literally touch and penetrate the surfaces of the artworks and something inevitably happens even if it is too subtle and invisible for us to detect but certain things just seem so obvious.

une sublimation d'humanisme

today a poignant comment was made by a collector who returned to see the marcos carrasquer exhibition "nobody's dead"  for the second day in a row. she said that she could sense in his work "une sublimation d'humanisme" despite the presence of sadistic scenes or horrific subject matter. she said without knowing marcos that he must deep down be a humanist at heart because she felt an ultimate hopefulness coming from his work.
her capacity to express this type of truth is an example of what i call seeing with the heart's eye; she was clearly receiving from his paintings and drawings well beyond the visible. but it is only through the visible of course that the invisible level can be accessed which is why paintings are doorways into the unknown. it isn't a matter of understanding intellectually with the frontal brain, it is an intuitive comprehension that the heart's antennae pick up.
if only i could figure out a way to show people how to open their heart's eye....wide open so that they can absorb in through their pores all this lovely life force.

de vita et moribus epicuri

last valentine's day, the gallery invited the jocelyne danchick dance company to perform "le monde entre parentheses" surrounded by the remarkable paintings of marcos carrasquer. everyone assumed that the choreographer and the painter had collaborated; it seemed the dancers had stepped out of the paintings.
given that neither marcos nor jocelyne knew of eachother's work prior to the performance, i would say it was a  'cosmic collaboration'  in an alternative space-time.  i simply want to share with you some of the photos that danielle voirin took of the performance.

on line at last!

for the past year, the gallery's website has been a true laboratory of suppositions, though mostly taking place behind the screen where the public eye had no access.
following the gallery's big move in the fall of 2007, it was clear that the website needed to move on and grow as well. and now, a year and a half after opening the big space, the new website is finally open to the public. let's hope you enjoy it. one of the things i most wanted to include in the new version was this blog so that i might be able to share in an ongoing way, the valuable and meaningful things that take place in the gallery's daily life. my wish is to create the habit of constant and consistent blogging, so that these words become a living testimony to art's startling magic.
